Biomimicry at Scale

Radiolaria are a type of plankton that exist throughout the ocean. They are approximately 0.1-0.2mm, and create intricate mineral skeletons in many different geometric forms.

These mineral skeletons are shed at the end of their life cycle, contributing to the siliceous ooze that makes up a large portion of ocean floor. By using these intricate geometric forms as design cues for biomimicry, and potentially utilizing material from the ocean floor as a sustainable building material, Radialis aims to both mimic existing natural design while using the material of its namesake as one of it’s materialities.

Radialis was commissioned for design by a private client
